Marketing – The Snowball Effect

There aren’t many authors who embrace marketing with as much verve, attention, and love as we do our writing. There’s nothing more thrilling than publishing a book – but as soon as I published book#2 I recognised The Snowball Effect i.e. I now had to market / maintain / manage TWO books. And then came book#3, needing its own marketing, while the other 2 were still side-eyeing me for attention, then #4, then…

Nice worry to have? Well, I hope I’m never complacent about getting books published (and read and liked, thank you to all who have!) but that’s when you realise this is a BUSINESS. However modest, however personal, however creative as opposed to constructive… it is MORE than just writing.

The only good thing about The Snowball Effect, in my opinion, is that it nudges you firmly into building something that’s scaleable. That is, the process you build for book #1 – put it on your website, on book reading sites, send a newsletter, prepare a detailed sheet for reviewers, copy the cover art in the right size, keep the Buy link to hand for social media posts etc etc – can all be used in exactly the same format for books #2 through #200 (*cough* *if ever*). Your response to marketing will gain the Snowball Effect’s benefits as well as the pressure.

There’s no magic bullet of Marketing to keep us in the public eye. Obviously the most important thing is to keep writing, but I’ve been mulling over these 3 Tips recently blogged in Angela Booth’s blog. I don’t buy many self help books, or subscribe to many that’s-the-way-to-do-it blogs, but now and then I’m sure we all find advice that resonates with the way we work. These felt just right for me, and in sound-bites I can cope with.

1. DEVOTE TEN MINUTES A DAY TO MARKETING, EVERY DAY

Listen up. Ten minutes a day is powerful. I don’t care how busy you are, you can spend ten minutes a day on marketing. That’s over an hour a week. And that hour is cumulative.

2. YOU’RE A BRAND, FROM DAY ONE: EVERYTHING YOU SAY AND DO BUILDS YOUR BRAND

Since everything is branding, don’t worry about it. Instead, focus on your ten minutes of marketing a day — and write, write, and write some more.

3. BE AWARE THAT PEOPLE TAKE YOU AT YOUR OWN EVALUATION OF YOURSELF

There’s a truism which suggests that to be successful, you need to act as if you are successful. I’m not suggesting that you tell falsehoods

Strive to be professional. Write, and market your writing, even if you’ve never made a dollar from your words. When you continue to write and market, success is inevitable.
