Spread a Little Kindness

Happy Birthday Month, Clare! 🙂

One of the fun things about taking part in Clare’s birthday month celebration is that it’s my birthday month as well. Today, in fact. It’s a milestone year, but which milestone I’m keeping to myself. *wink* What I’m not keeping to myself are the birthday pressies.

Back in the old days, as those of us who’ve reached a certain age like to say, I was twenty-two years old, living in Los Angeles, and working two jobs. One afternoon on my way from one job to the other, I stopped at a corner store. For what, I no longer remember. I do remember I was tired, and there were some serious issues in my relationship weighing on my mind. I remember being on some sort of autopilot mode at the register, pulling my wallet out of my purse. And I remember a man I’d never seen before, or seen again after. He came up beside me, slid a bill across the counter for the store clerk and said, “I’ve got this.”

I was stunned silent for a moment while I searched for my voice. Who was he? What did he really want? I’d already had a couple of close encounters with the less than savory Hollywood types promising stardom, but who in reality were only offering a street corner and a happy pill to keep you in check.

When I finally found my voice and told him thank you but I couldn’t possibly accept. He just shook his head and smiled at me. He was a few inches shorter than me, with scruffy blond hair, wearing faded jeans and a plain T-shirt under a beat up jean jacket. I don’t remember the color of his eyes or the sound of his voice, but I do remember how light I felt when he said, “This is for me. Now you do something for you.”

It’s a bit shocking to say it’s been more than [mumble-mumble] years since that day, but I’ve never forgotten that man, his kind gesture, or the warm smile he left me.

Since then I’ve tried to make a point of doing little things here and there for others, remembering how it felt to have someone do something unexpected and kind for me. Even just letting a friend know you’re thinking of them can be enough to change the course of their day for the better.

And the amazing thing about sharing a little kindness with others? You receive just as much in return. Your reward is that light feeling at knowing you made someone smile, or made their day just a little brighter, even if for only that moment. And that moment, this moment, is really the only one we all have. So grab it with both hands and make it count.

You have that power. We all have that power. Use it and use it often.

About clarelondon

Clare London took her pen name from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with her other day job as an accountant. She’s written in many genres and across many settings, with award-winning novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she’s just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she’s happy. Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic, and sexy characters. Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter three stage and plenty of other projects in mind... she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home. 1. Happy Birthday L.C. and Happy Birthday month Clare (and may I add, Happy Birthday month to me too?).

I couldn’t agree more. It is the random acts of kindness, either given or received, which give life that extra special glow. Thank you for a wonderful post.

  2. This is where I am in life – expressing gratitude for the people and the things in my life – hence the reverse advent calendar in December. Actively looking for ways to be be generous helped me realise that time carries on regardless of how we choose to to use it. I’m thinking about doing monthly somethings, just to be using my time well. This month might be a daily photograph. Next month – who knows?

Also, be proud of how many free trips around the sun you’ve clocked up. Growing old is a privilege denied to many.

  6. Belated Happy Birthday LC! And a hearty AMEN to this. A little kindness goes a long way. Kindness itself costs literally nothing! We should be sharing that sh*t all over the place 😀 Imagine how much easier life would be for all of us.
